White Deer in the Finger LakesSeneca County is home to the only known naturally occuring herd of white deer in the Country. The deer inhabit the fenced in area of the old Seneca Army Depot. They are not albino as they do not have pink eyes. They are typically seen along the fenceline on the East side Rt 96A (a bit North of Sampson State Park) or South of Romulus on the West side of Rt 414. They are more likely to be seen closer to sunup and sundown. They are often in the company of brown deer and it is not uncommon to see a mother with both white and brown children. The White Deer are currently protected and money is being raised by the Seneca White Deer Organization to make sure they continue to be protected in the future.
