The best area for Cross-country skiing in the Finger Lakes

The hills and valleys in the Finger Lakes are beautiful any time of year but in the winter they take on a white washed look that should not be missed. One of the best ways to see it up-close and have a bit of fun at the same time is to see it on cross-country skis or snow-shoes. Here are what the region's innkeepers have to recommend as the best area for cross-country skiing in the Finger Lakes.

The Keuka Lake Outlet Trail

The Outlet Trail between Penn Yan & Dresden.  It's a beautiful hiking trail in the summer and in the winter the same waterfalls that the trail winds by are magically decked out in giant icicles.  The falls are usually partially frozen adding to the winter scenery.  There are ample places to park at either end, so if people come as a group, they can leave a car at each end in case the entire 6 mile trail is too tedious. ~ Terry - Keuka Overlook B&B

Keuka Lake Outlet Trail starting in Dresden (south of Geneva on the western shore of Seneca Lake) is great. ~ Cristina & Fernando Diaz - The Farr Inn

Cross-country skiing is not my thing, but my kids, among others think the Keuka Outlet Trail is great. ~ Glenda Nash - Gentle Giants Bed and Breakfast

Finger Lakes National Forest - The trails seem to go on as far as you want them to and pass through both fields and forests. It is pure and simple beauty at its best. The only thing that makes it better is some hot cocoa in a thermos. Located on the Southeastern side of Seneca Lake. ~ Steve and Kathy Wirt - Wine Country Cabins Bed & Breakfast

Cummings Nature Center - Located in Naples at the south end of Canandaigua Lake it's open on weekends for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. ~ Sheryl - The Acorn Inn Bed and Breakfast
