The best movie theater in the Finger Lakes

If the weather turns bad and you are looking for something to do, sometimes a good movie is what you need to fill in for a while. The Finger Lakes are dotted with a handful of movie theaters. Here our region's best innkeepers give their recommendations on the best movie theater in the Finger Lakes

The Smith Opera House

Built in 1894, it is among the oldest operating theaters in the U.S. The grand interior has been lovingly restored, and as a performing arts center hosts live entertainment of all forms as well as showing the better domestic and foreign language films. With a gigantic screen, balcony seating, and $1.00 popcorn, it's a wonderful opportunity to step back in time to the days of majestic movie theaters. ~ Donna Cunningham - Yale Manor Bed and Breakfast

The Smith has live shows, but also shows movies - some vintage, some recently released. The theater has been restored to its original glory, and is worth seeing, whatever is playing there. Located on Seneca St, in Geneva at the North end of Seneca Lake. ~ Judith Austic - Barrister's Bed and Breakfast

Fernando and I have seen quite a few International films there; the acoustics and ambiance are excellent!  They even have apres-film discussion groups....which, is wonderful.  After all, we see a new film so that we can TALK about it afterwards, right? ~ Cristina Diaz - The Farr Inn

We don't go to the movies much but when I do it's usually to the Smith Opera House in Geneva. The acoustics are great and they've done a beautiful job on the restoration. ~ Glenda Nash, Gentle Giants B&B

The Glen Theatre - is a small, old fashioned neighborhood type theater which shows some fairly current movies at the amazing, bargain price of, I believe, $3. Located on North Franklyn Street in Watkins Glen at the South end of Seneca Lake. ~ Barbara Schiesser - Sunrise Landing Bed and Breakfast

The Finger Lakes Drive-In - Very few movie theaters let you bring your own seats. The Finger Lakes Drive-in is one exception as long as the seats you are brining are attached to your car. Drive-ins are becoming quite rare so this is a unique experience. They play fairly current releases and you can use the old clip on speakers or tune the sound in on your car's radio. Located on Rt 5&20 just West of Auburn. ~ Steve & Kathy Wirt - Wine Country Cabins B&B

The Plaza Movie Theater - It has recently been remodeled so it's clean and modern.  There are three seperate theaters, and before or after taking in the movie you can stroll around the quaint little town (voted one of the top 100 small towns in America!) Located on Lake Street in Penn Yan at the Northeastern tip of Keuka Lake. ~ Terry - Keuka Overlook B&B
